1. Merryman Trail

Passing through lush woodlands, streams, and the shores of Loch Raven, the Merryman Trail is an excellent spot for anyone looking for an easy trek that both beginners and experienced hikers can complete. The trail is in the northern outskirts of Baltimore, making it a popular nature escape for visitors from the city. To avoid the crowds, we recommend you visit early in the morning when the fog creates an almost magical environment in the forest.

Getting to the beginning of the Merryman Trail from Red Lion takes a little over 45 minutes by car, driving south along route I-83 and across the Maryland state line. If you decide to check out this beautiful trail, make sure to visit the ruins of historical stone structures that stand just a few meters from the lakeshore. Not far from them, you will see some photogenic waterfalls surrounded by tall trees and wildflowers.

2. Appalachian Trail

With a total length of more than 2,200 miles, the Appalachian Trail is one of the most popular hiking destinations for trekkers from all over the country. From Red Lion, it is easy to reach the section that goes through the beautiful Michaux State Forest. Although completing the entire trail is a cross-country adventure that can take months, this path is a great place to get away from the city and immerse yourself in nature.

Getting to the section of the Appalachian Trail at the Michaux State Forest from the town of Red Lion takes a little over an hour by car, driving west along route PA-232. The park covers more than 85,000 acres of second-growth forest, making it a well-known spot not only for hiking but for various outdoor activities, including camping, boating, horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing, and cross-country skiing.

3. Turkey Hill Overlook Trail

Located less than 20 miles northeast of Red Lion, the Turkey Hill Overlook Trail begins at the Turkey Hill Nature Preserve and features a total length of approximately six miles. Passing through thick woodlands, small streams, and scenic viewpoints of the Susquehanna River, it is an excellent hiking destination for those in search of a nature escape not far from the city.
