The motor oil in your engine lubricates the internal parts of your engine to reduce friction that can negatively impact performance. Engine oil is also responsible for preventing buildup and keeping your engine clean, which is why you should schedule regular oil change appointments at your Chrysler dealer.

As a general rule of thumb, it’s a good idea to schedule an oil service for your vehicle once every six months. However, many factors can determine the best frequency for your oil service, such as the age of your vehicle, your driving habits, and the motor oil your vehicle uses.

Age

Older vehicles are more likely to have less efficient motors, which means you might need to schedule oil service every three to five months. Engines for older vehicles are also more likely to use conventional oil, which must be changed more frequently since this oil can degrade much faster than today’s motor oil.

Driving Habits

If you drive your car every day in heavy traffic or you make repetitive short trips in your vehicle, you may need to replace your motor oil more frequently than other drivers. If you happen to drive your car in extreme temperatures, on dusty roads, or you tow a heavy haul, then your motor oil might degrade more quickly. Severe usage usually means you should schedule oil service two to three times a year.

Some experts recommend an oil service every six months even if you don’t drive your car frequently. Many drivers mistakenly believe that a stagnant vehicle doesn’t require new motor oil, but standing oil degrades over time and may not provide adequate lubrication to your engine.

Oil Type

Modern vehicles typically use semi-synthetic or full-synthetic motor oil. If your engine uses either of these engineered oils, you might be able to stretch your oil service appointments to once every 7,500 miles or so. Some synthetic oils can even last for 12 months. If you aren’t sure what type of oil your car uses, you can check your previous service receipt or your owner’s manual.

How Long Does Routine Oil Service Take?

You can usually expect your oil service to take half an hour. It’s common for your oil service to be combined with other routine services, such as oil filter and air filter replacement, tire rotation, wheel alignment, and fluid checks. If other services are combined with your motor oil replacement, your appointment may take an hour.

To extend the life of your engine, you need to routinely change the motor oil in your car. The type of oil your engine uses and your specific make can influence the frequency of your oil service. Book your next oil service at Thornton Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram today.
