Codorus Furnace One of York County's most historic structures, Codorus Furnace is not your typical picnic spot. On this site, you'll find a lot to love, including the iron furnace plus a variety of associated buildings. There's the charcoal house, the worker's homes, the 2.5-story ironmaster's house, and the ruins of other unknown stone structures. Codorus Furnace measures 30 feet square and stands 12 feet tall. This picnic spot is just off of Furnace Rd. You'll find ample parking and a unique backdrop for a tasty packed lunch outdoors. 4. Samuel S. Lewis State Park Samuel S. Lewis State Park at 6000 Mt. Pisgah Rd. in Lower Windsor Twp. is an 85-acre park that touts one of the best views of York County. With its 885-foot-high ridge, it offers an excellent alternative picnic spot for those that don't want to climb the nearby Highpoint Scenic Vista. On the top of Samuel S. Gusa World Music Festival The Gusa World Music Festival is an annual event where the program organizers firmly believe in the power of music as a bridge between communities. The festival is a two-day event when families and children can come together to enjoy musical and cultural performances from around the globe alongside their fellow York neighbors. This year's festival will be held at Peoplesbank Park on June 7 and 8 and will feature more than a dozen performances by marching bands, dance groups, soloists, and other world music performers. While the admission prices have not yet been announced, the Gusa World Music Festival will generously donate a portion of the earnings to the York chapter of Girls on the Run, a non-profit organization that motivates and empowers school-age girls. more Yorkfest Fine Arts Festival One of York's most popular events, the Yorkfest Fine Arts Festival is the region's premier fine arts festival. Featuring the works of over 100 fine artists from around the country, the festival will run this year on August 24 and 25, with an opening reception on Friday, August 23. All events at Yorkfest are free and open to the public. Yorkfest is held in downtown York in and around the Colonial Complex and along the York County Heritage Rail Trail between Princess and Philadelphia Streets. In addition to the artists' works on display, Yorkfest is a destination for food and drinks, children's activities, and art and literary competitions for kids and adults. Don't miss the Historic Codorus Creek Boat Parade or the community mural project which invites visitors to participate in the creation of a communal work of art. Loomis Brothers "Circus Traditions Tour" The Loomis Brothers are coming back to York for another exciting run of this premier traveling circus. The circus features such exciting attractions as the Mighty Loomis Brothers Circus Performing Elephants, the Loomis Brothers Performing Ponies, and the thrilling Motorcycle Globe of Death. The Windy City Acrobats will be making their first appearance to this event in 2019, and there will also be many other new and thrilling performances. The Loomis Brothers Circus will take over the York Expo Arena for four performances May 8 and 9. Tickets are $20 for adults, which also includes admission for up to two children between the ages of 2 and 12, and $8 for each additional child ages 2 to 12. Children under the age of 2 are admitted free of charge. York Fair Often called America's First Fair, the York Fair was first held in 1765 and continues to delight visitors to this day. Today's fair is chock full of rides, fun treats, games, and lots of other fun surprises. This year's fair features an amazing entertainment lineup with stars like Brad Paisley and the Charlie Daniels Band. The York Fair runs from September 6 through 15 at the York Fairgrounds. Admission for adults is $8 and children under 5 years old are free. Children and teens ages 6 through 18 and college students with ID are $4, and a pass for the entire fair is $75.

Kate Penn — Daily Record/Sunday News" The York County Heritage Rail Trail is a favorite historic site in York County. Here are a few things to check out while you're there. Steam Into History Steam Into History is an authentic railroad ride through time. While you enjoy the amazing scenery both inside and outside the replica Civil War-era steam locomotive, you'll meet presidents and generals and experience the Wild West in all its glory. You'll visit historic train stops, like Hanover Junction Rail Station, and learn about the Underground Railroad. During the fall, you can enjoy a Fall Foliage train ride to take in the changing of the leaves, or you can take the kids on the Eggspecially Fun Bunny Run where they can visit and take pictures with the Easter Bunny. These and more authentic themed programs run year round on premium equipment. Bring the kids to see Santa or host a tea party with all your friends. Walking and Biking The North Central Railroad Trail (NCR) and York County Heritage Trail (YCH) make up the York County Heritage Rail Trail. Stretching 41 miles, this majority-rural trail begins in Ashland, Maryland, as the North Central Railroad Trail. It travels north 20 miles, across the Mason-Dixon line, into Pennsylvania, where it becomes the York County Heritage Rail Trail. The trail then continues for 21 more miles to York, Pennsylvania. The NCR section is more rural, so bring any food or drink you may need on your trip. The YCH stretch has amenities every few miles so you won't go hungry, but you may want to bring change along for the vending machines. Parking can also be limited, but there are several points along the trail where you can park your vehicle. You may need to walk to the access point from the parking area, though. Tour the Colonial Complex The Colonial Complex is adjacent to the Rail Trail in Downtown York. The four historic buildings can be toured in 45 to 60 minutes with a guide who will walk you through York County's role in the Revolutionary War as well as the everyday life and culture of the 18th century. The Golden Plough Tavern, built in 1741, was a place for travelers and locals to get their news and information. The General Horatio Gates House, built in 1751, was an upper-class English home. The reconstructed Colonial Courthouse tells the story of the Second Continental Congress. The Barnett Bobb Log House, built in 1812, is also on site. This building was relocated to the Colonial Complex and is used for artisan demonstrations and hands-on activities. York County Fire Museum Found in the 1903 Royal Fire House, this museum is home to a collection of over 225 years' of firefighting equipment and shows how York firefighters worked and lived. With six fire trucks from the 1920s through 1950s, hand-drawn pumpers, historic alarms, and uniforms, this museum is very educational for all ages.
