There’s nothing quite like an old-fashion train ride, and for those living in York County, you’ll find a number of places you can go to ride the train just like they did back in the 1800s. Many of the train rides offered in the area host exciting events for the holidays. If you’re looking for a fun way to spend time with the family or a special way to celebrate a holiday or birthday, check out one of these train rides you can take this season in York County.

  1. Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village

A visit to the Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village is more than just a train ride. Start out by taking a walking tour of the grounds. Buildings are open during the operating season, but you can walk the grounds and check out all the buildings from the outside anytime of year. You’ll get to see what a 1900s village would have been like complete with a grain elevator, grain chute, scale house, roller mills, a fertilizer warehouse, coal bins, and lots more.

Train rides and guided tours of the village are offered June through Labor Day weekend, but other events are hosted throughout the year. One special and very popular event is the Pumpkin Patch Excursion. With a ticket for this ride, children will receive a pumpkin and a decorating kit, and cookies and drinks are provided for everyone.

  1. Northern Central Railway

Head to the station in New Freedom for a fun-filled train ride on the Northern Central Railway. This historic railway provides passengers with a ride through the beautiful countryside, and you can choose from a variety of coaches to get the most out of your experience. However, not all coaches run at the same time, so check the calendar to make sure the train you want to ride is running on the day you plan to go.

One of the more popular events this railway hosts is the Santa Express. Get your tickets soon if you want to enjoy the Christmas cheer that only a train ride can bring. With Christmas music playing and a recital of “The Night Before Christmas”, you and the kids will be overtaken with joy when Santa Claus makes his appearance.

  1. Stewartstown Railroad

Another place offering train rides that makes you feel like a kid again is Stewartstown Railroad. This is one of the most scenic train rides in the area as well as one of the longest continually running common-carrier trains. In addition to their regular excursions, you can also get tickets for special events. This includes the Halloween Haunt Train, the Fall Foliage Train, and the Santa Express Train. These events are fun and exciting for people of all ages.

Whether you’re taking the kids for the first time or you’re taking your grandkids for the same ride you used to take your kids on, the Stewartstown Railroad makes for a memorable day of family fun.

Check out these train rides this season for an experience you and your kids won’t soon forget. Remember to bring your camera so you can snap beautiful photos as the train rolls along the tracks.
