2020 Ram 2500 HDIf one of the things you’re interested in having on your next new vehicle is quality, look no further than the Ram 2500 Heavy Duty truck. Winner of the ‘Best of What’s New’ award from Popular Science, you’re sure to find plenty of features and amenities that fit your driving lifestyle.

Exterior Trims

You’ll have a choice of six trims: Big Horn, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, Limited, Tradesman, and Power Wagon. The truck has a regular cab with a short bed, and a Crew Cab with an 8-foot bed. The 2500 has availability of 4×4 and 4×2 drivetrains on all trims with the exception of the Power Wagon, which is only available as a 4×4.

Under the Hood

The 2500 Heavy Duty is Ram tough when it comes to power and towing capability. In the power department, the base engine is a 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 producing 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. There’s also a 6.7-liter inline-6 Cummins producing 370 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque. At the upper level, the High Output Cummins turbodiesel pumps out 400 horsepower and, for the first time, 1,000 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed or eight-speed automatic transmission is available.

When it comes to impressive towing capability, the High Output Cummins working with the Aisin 8-speed automatic transmission can take care of business with payloads up to 7,680 pounds and towing up to 35,100 pounds.

Performance

Performance-wise, the 2500 Heavy Duty has plenty of support especially when it comes to off-road capability thanks to several features. These include a disconnecting front stabilizer bar, Bilstein shocks, front and rear locking differentials, Articulink suspension, high-traction tires, and a Warn Zeon-as winch.

Overall, even with the size and power of the Heavy Duty truck, the 2500 drives smoothly, quietly, and with precision thanks to standard-frequency-response damping shocks, C-pillar hydromounts, and tuned mass dampers.

Technology

The Heavy Duty isn’t lacking in infotainment technology starting with the 12-inch Uconnect touch screen with split-screen capability allowing drivers to have navigation running using other modes. The system is equipped with Apple CarPlay, satellite radio with 360L, and Android Auto. For entertainment, there’s a 750-watt Harman Kardon sound system, 17 speakers, five Type C USB, and three 110-volt 400-watt outlets. A wireless phone charger is optional.

Safety Features

The 2500 has plenty of safety features to support a confident drive whether you’re on the job or on a leisure drive around town. Standard across all trims is a reversing camera fitted with zoom and trajectory lines. If you choose the safety package, you’ll have the addition of forward-collision mitigation equipped with auto emergency braking, adaptive cruise control fitted with full stop, rain-sensing wipers, automatic high beams. Depending on the trim, rear cross-traffic and blind-spot monitoring is available.

A towing technology package enhances the safety of the 2500 Heavy Duty with additional features. These include trailer tow mirrors, cargo-view and surround-view cameras, blind-spot monitoring, trailer reverse guidance, and blind-spot monitoring.
